The Deerfield Young Warriors is a program designed to provide the opportunity for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys with a serious interest in basketball to participate in accelerated competition with accelerated guidance and to have the chance to become familiar with the Deerfield High School basketball program. We accomplish this objective as a member of the Northern Illinois Feeder Basketball Association (NIFBA), an organization including programs throughout the northern and near west suburbs. However, we are unique among feeder programs in that we include in our schedule games with teams in the City of Chicago and elsewhere, and by participation in various competitive tournaments here and in Wisconsin.
This will be the 29th year that John Lyons has run the Young Warriors’ program in Deerfield. As its founder and director, he has been a participant and longtime board member of the above referenced NIFBA and its predecessor the Greater Suburban Feeder Basketball Association.
There will be an A (Red), B (White), and B2 (Black) team selected in each grade 5th through 8th as the need requires. Most other feeder programs have corresponding A, B, and B2 teams, and our teams will be matched up accordingly. This year, our teams will participate in the Travel Feeder League Basketball League (NSBL) as well as various feeder tournaments.
Each new year we objectively observe all candidates for that season to decide who is best suited for the various levels of our feeder program at the time. All teams are selected by the collective opinions of all of our coaches and will be selected independent of prior year’s experiences.
The tryout schedule will be posted on this site as soon as we have been notified about availability of Deerfield High School and School District 109 gym space and will be emailed to our list of interested families. The well-regarded ALL IN Athletics program run by Billy Welcome will once again assist in running our 5th grade Deerfield feeder program as well as Junior Young Warrior 3rd & 4th grade teams. Players competing for all these feeder teams must reside within Deerfield's school districts or attend schools in Deerfield or Bannockburn. For more info on ALL IN visit aiathletics.com.
If a player on any Young Warriors team simultaneously plays on any other non-school traveling basketball team, or on a traveling team of any sport, and misses 3 Y-W events (practices or games) to play elsewhere, then he will be unable to participate in our program. We think it is unfair to those boys who did not make the feeder roster to have players on our team choose to play elsewhere. Repeated conflicts in past years that have resulted in forcing cancellations of tournament entrances make this ruling imperative.
The season will last from mid-November until spring break. Most of November and December's activities will be practice sessions. We will play approximately 25-30 games. We will also offer clinics during the fall which will feature visiting instructors. Our Young Warrior season normally concludes the season at a 2 day tournament at Concordia College just north of Milwaukee in mid-March if appropriate brackets are offered in this event.
